“How to get published” in Los Angeles Times Entertainment -Calendar, The Envelope and more at media workshop for publicists

Hollywood, CA – “She was a tough lady, but will always be remembered as one who was very protective of her clients as we should be,” said EPPS President Henri Bollinger, who had talked to the slain longtime Publicist Ronni Chasen the day before she was gunned down in Beverly Hill, Ca.

The Publicist was driving home on Sunset Blvd. from an after-party and the premiere of Cher’s new movie “Burlesque.” Detectives said they believed it was a deliberate hit, when they discovered the publicist in her black Mercedes sedan, which was wrapped around a light pole.  Chasen had suffered five gunshot wounds to the chest according to police.

“I was so traumatized that I realized that I was still only worried about an answer on a project, when a friend called and told me of her tragedy,” said Bollinger.

“It was then I realize that we need to live for the day, and you can not always be concerned over what you believe is important or a benefit to me. It took the better part of the day to reconcile,” he said.

Bollinger offered a moment of silence at the LA Times Entertainment Editors media workshop, immediately following his remarks at the ICG Local 600 Union Auditorium, Hollywood, CA. (Nov. 18, 2010).

listening to other panelists.

One of the pet peaves of editors is sending multiple email pitches, which could be the kiss of death. Randall Roberts reminded everyone about the email overload.

Roberts also echoed earlier comments that social media drives traffic, and influences his decisions on story assignments. Often Robert says, he gets a lot of people who care about what he writes, and trend stories often pop up on Twitter and Facebook.

Roberts currently oversees all of the rock, pop, hip hop, electronic, world music, soundtrack and country coverage – basically everything except jazz and classical.

Los AngelesOctober 14, 2010 The Last Elephants in Thailand by Michelle Mizner and Don Tayloe will screen at the 6th Annual LA Femme Film Festival, on Saturday, October 16 at 6pm.  The film, a stunning statement on elephant abuse in Thailand and beyond, has already garnered wins at the San Antonio Film Festival, Bangkok IndieFest and the Venice Green Screen Film Festival and will compete at the United Nations Association Film Festival (October 22 – 31) at Stanford University.  The filmmakers’ prescient insight is also being brought to light by Hollywood via the new Reese Witherspoon film Water for Elephants.  The film will be introduced by the legendary Tippi Hedren, a well-known animal activist.

Michelle Mizner is a documentary filmmaker from Central California.  She studied cinema and creative writing on full scholarship at Cal State Northridge, where she directed Barrio Thief, a short film about a family affected by drug-resistant tuberculosis in Peru.  Upon graduation, Michelle they joined forces with Don Tayloe to make this film, a process that altogether took almost 2 years.   “Don and I were both working full time jobs and living on opposite sides of the country, but this was a passion project.  It began as a small story about an elephant hospital in Thailand, however as we were filming and made aware of the hardships faced everyday by domesticated elephants and the humans who care for them, and we knew we had an urgent responsibility to share.

Michelle hopes the film challenges viewers to consider their own opinions about how and why elephants are used in entertainment and tourism, both at home and abroad.  “People love elephants.  So its heartbreaking to learn that something as innocent and alluring as an elephant painting can actually be the result of serious torture.”

Don Tayloe is a practicing internist at the VA Hospital in Fresno.  He became interested in the Elephant Hospital in Thailand because of the uniqueness of a hospital that only treated elephants.  It gave him the chance to observe cutting edge veterinary medicine applied to elephants.

Tippi Hedren, actress, producer, activist was the recipient of the “Thespian Award” from the LA Femme Film Festival in 2008.

The LA Femme Film Festival, now in its sixth year, runs October 14- 17, 2010. The Last Elephants in Thailand will screen at the Davidson Valentini Theater, The Village at Ed Gould Plaza in Hollywood on Saturday, October 16, at 6pm.  Tickets for the festival can be purchased online atwww.LAFemme.org or at the box office.

“Eclipse” gives movie fans a full moon with Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart – new box office record

Those in charge are now wondering if “Eclipse” will be a larger box office hit than “New Moon” or if they will receive a total domestic gross of about $300 million.

Since most of us have Monday off for the 4th of July holiday,  this movie is predicted to gross big bucks in the first week, more close to $200 million.

More than $1 million of “Eclipse” ticket sales Tuesday night came from Imax screens according the Los Angeles Times.

It appears that the huge following of movie stars Robert PattinsonTaylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart is paying off, if the recent premiere is any indication.

“Eclipse” has the advantage of being the first “Twilight” movie to open in the summer and also the first to play on Imax screens — 193 total — which carry higher ticket prices. However, “Eclipse” also easily broke the previous record for midnight ticket sales in the summer: $22.2 million for “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” last summer.

Hollywood Publicists Scores Big in Six Events In One Day

92-year-old Hollywood publicist Julian Myers competed in the California State Senior Meet June 5th at CalTech in Pasadena in track and field in his age group and won five first places and a second  “to popularize AmigoDay,” Myers said.

AmigoDay is the holiday he and his wife Patsy founded six years ago:  “Just greet anyone anywhere, your way, any month’s first Sunday.”

The Senior Meet was open to anyone from anywhere so it fit AmigoDay’s criterion for sponsorship and Myers’ participation.

Myers was second in the 50-meter, tied for first in the 100, won the 200, 400 and  1,500 meter and long jump.

Julian Myers after running 90 miles from San Diego to LA invited 390 of his best friends to his 90th birthday party that ends on the same day as the LA Marathon.

He won the 1,500- meter American championships in 2006, 2007, 2008 and “probably 2009″ which he scored at the Huntsman World Senior Games in St. George, Utah.     Each year he participates in six events in St. George in one day (“for AmigoDay”),  and will again October 6th.

Julian is still active in Hollywood publicity, having graduated from USC in 1939 in Cinema,  and publicized Elvis Presley, John Wayne and other stars at 20th-Fox  beginning in 1949. Julian is a former board member of Entertainment Publicists Professional Society (EPPS) and one of the most trusted and known in celebrity circles and entertainment publicity.

Entertainment business, trade and tourism cited as industries to lead recovery says new study

LAEDC Forecast Report Says U.S., California and Southern California face a measured economic recovery, with stronger growth in 2011

Entertainment, international trade and tourism cited as regional industry leaders, with an economic boost from major infrastructure projects and a modest rebound in residential real estate

Los Angeles A measured economic recovery is underway in the nation, the state and Southern California, according to the 2010-2011“Economic Forecast & Industry Outlook” report released today by the Kyser Center for Economic Research at the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC).

In California, three sectors will see employment growth during 2010: information, private education and health services.  Like the national experience, unemployment rates in the state will remain high with the LAEDC forecasting a 12.3 percent average rate in 2010, easing down to 11.9 percent in 2011.

“We project that the U.S. economy will grow by 2.6 percent in 2010 and by

3.1 percent in 2011, after plunging by 2.4 percent during 2009,” said Nancy D. Sidhu, Ph.D., the LAEDC’s chief economist.  “However, unemployment rates in the U.S. will remain uncomfortably high, averaging 9.9 percent in 2010 and 9.4 percent in 2011.”

Sidhu observed that consumer spending holds one of the keys to the economic recovery, with inflation-adjusted gains of 1.9 percent in 2010 and 2.7 percent in 2011 forecast, after falling by 0.6 percent in 2009.

“California’s economy is also on the recovery track, but the state will still lose 121,800 jobs in 2010,” said Sidhu.  “However, this will be a huge improvement from the 668,200 jobs lost in 2009.”  California’s housing industry will see a modest recovery in 2010, according to Sidhu.
